40 Holborn Viaduct

2007 - London - Stone

Architect: Rolfe Judd / Client: Castlemore / Contractor: Balfour Beatty

This prestigious office building is located between Holborn Viaduct, Charterhouse Street and Shoe Lane. It has a splendid view over High Holborn. The goal of this project was to create a triangle volume with rounded corners and inclined rounded parapets with the appearance of a pebble stone. The building has a few huge oriel windows penetrating out of its stone façade.

The challenges which Loveld needed to solve were:

  • The selection & QA of a granite with a line structure & sand colour. Eventually the Architect chose ‘Raw Silk’ an Indian granite.
  • Designing a precast system allowing the incorporation of the aluminium windows off site. This was obtained by incorporating a hidden stainless steel profile.
  • The design of all natural stone for the curved surfaces in two directions of all inclined and curved parapets. For these parapets only we produced over 1.100 CNC-files of different curved, angled & twisted stones.
