Architect: Xaveer De Geyter / Client: Europacollege / Contractor: Himpe
This extension to the College of Europe with 2 new buildings for the faculties for Economy and Law, designed by architect Xaveer De Geyter, were added to an old school campus located in the centre of Bruges, along one of the canals. The campus now consists of the two new volumes next to old, valuable buildings, creating new patios together.
The big challenge here was to add this innovating architecture to a charged, historical context. The white, uniform grid face made from polished prefabricated panels determines the look of the extension and provides a refined interaction between old and new. The concrete grid adds depth as well as texture to the facades of the buildings. These panels in polished concrete were manufactured using white cement and Norwegian white marble aggregates.
